The OpenDay gives you the possibility to get in touch with modern digital production technologies in a user friendly environment and become part of the maker community in a casual atmosphere. The concept behind the OpenDays is to give everyone the chance to use a modern machine park to realize personal projects and prototypes. The OpenDay  is not an event for commercial or series production. For projects in the industrial and research field please contact our staff. 

Facts:

  • The OpenDay takes place once a month on Thursdays* between 2pm and 6pm (*check the calendar below).
  • Machine-types have to be booked in advance - check the calendar below.
  • Machines can't be reserved for a certain time-slot - operations are based on the "first come, first served" principle.
  • During the OpenDay you can use our machines for free.
  • Check the steps below.

Digital Openday

  • Register

    Please register for the digital version of the OpenDay in the calendar below. You will receive an e-mail with a link and login information for the virtual OpenDay via the plattform "WebEx".

  • Join the OpenDay

    The virtual Rooms will be open from 14:00 to 16:00.
    Join at any time and talk with our staff or other people from the community.

  • Rooms & Breakout Sessions

    We offer you different virtual Rooms and Breakout Sessions to answer your questions and help you with your project.


    • 14:00 - 16:00
      Main room - General information and questions about the Schumpeter Laboratory for Innovation and the FabLab.
      Breakout Session 1 - 3D Printing and 3D Scanning
      Breakout Session 2 - Laser cutting / Waterjet cutting / CNC milling
  • Help

    Talk with our staff about topics like:

    • What machines and tools do we have and how can you use them when we are open again?
    • What is the best production technology for your project or prototype?
    • How do you have to prepare your data / or is it already prepared the right way?
    • ...

  • Make

    Physical presence or using our machines is NOT possible at the moment, but you can join a digital OpenDay and check with our staff if your data is prepared correctly to ensure that your project is ready when we are open again.

Changes & Rules of Conduct

Physical OPENDAYs & TRAININGs

The current Corona (Covid19 / SARS-CoV-2) situation also affects the OpenDay of the FabLab at the Schumpeter Laboratory for Innovation. Please be advised that the following rules of conduct and changes are necessary and obligatory in order to make the Open Days possible again.

  • Registration

    Only if you register for a specific time slot in the calendar, you will have access to the FabLab and its equipment at the OpenDay. Please only register for one time slot per machine type and OpenDay. Available time slot and registration links you find in the calender below.

  • TU Graz - Rules of Conduct

    The FabLab is operated by the Institute of Innovation and Industrial Management at the TU Graz, so the compliance to its rules of conduct is obligatory. You can find the rules of conduct for visitors at the TU Graz under the following links:

  • Machine use ONLY

    The containment of the spread of the Covid19 virus requires disinfection of each workstation and each tool after its use by an individual. In order to ensure that the process is maintained and not blocked by the disinfection work, we only allow access to our machines. Unfortunately, the use of for example hand and power tools, electronic workstations or the sandblasting box is currently not possible.

  • Protection

    A valid 2,5G check ("PCR-getestet, geimpft, genesen" - "PCR-tested, vaccinated, recovered") and wearing a FFP2-Mask in the SLFI is mandatory. Please bring along your own FFP2-Mask

  • Digital Openday

    To keep in touch with our community and help you with your projects we offer you a digital version of the OpenDays. We are currently not able to manufacture your prototypes but we can still help you with the following topics via a video conference meeting:

    • Whats the right technology, machine and material to produce your prototype?

    • Data Preperation

    • Design to Manufacture

#1 - FabLab Training

  • Create an account

    In order to use any of our services you have to create an account first.

  • Basic Training

    Before using the FabLab for the first time, you need to complete the basic training. After the basic training you are able to enter the FabLab and operate our machines under the supervision of one of our employees. Basic training courses are held regularly. Please register.

  • Machine training

    After you have completed the basic training you can attend the machine training. In this training you will get an overview of the available machines & equipment. Additionally we will show you how to properly prepare your data for the different machine to enable an efficient workflow during the Openday. Since those trainings have a limited number of participants you have to register.

#2 - Prepare your project

  • Files

    Most of our machines are digital production machines. These machines need certain files to work. What kind of files you need and how to prepare them can be found in the machine descriptions in the Machine Park.

  • Materials

    Some basic materials may be purchased directly from the FabLab. other specific materials must be brought with you by yourself. Which materials are process able with which machine and which materials we have in stock, is shown in the machine descriptions in the Machine Park.

#3 - Use the FabLab

  • Pre-Registration

    To ensure that everyone who comes to the OpenDay gets access to the machine that is wanted to be used, we changed to a system with pre-registration. You can find the available machine-types in the calendar below.

  • Enter the Schumpeter Laboratory

    We offer an OpenDay on Thursdays between 14:00 and 18:00. It is free for everyone and works under the principle of "first come, first served"

  • Check-In

    A Member of our staff will welcome you at our front desk and help you with the Check-In.
    Required information will be:
    - What maschines do you want to use?
    - What is your project about
    - What will you use the produced parts for?
    Here you will also receive your ticket for the machine you wish to use

  • Locker Room

    In order to allow a productive working environment it is necessary that the space isn't cluttered with bags and jackets. Please leave those in the locker room.

  • Communication Area

    Until it is your turn to use the machines for which you have registered before your visit, you can wait in our meeting area, have a coffee and talk to the other makers about their projects. When it is your turn, one of our staff will take you to the machine and help you if necessary.

  • Make

    Now you are able to work on your project. If you have questions about the machines, how to operate them or how your prototype can be produced best, you are welcome to contact the staff at any time. Please don’t forget to clean up your workstation and return all tools you have used at the end of your session.

  • Check-Out

    Once you are done with everything, please check out at the reception desk. If you have used material from the FabLab, please pay the fee and don’t forget your personal belongings.

Physical OpenDays


As soon as the situation will allow us to hold physical OpenDays again the following steps describe our normal procedure:

#1 - FabLab Training

  • Create an account

    In order to use any of our services you have to create an account first.
